Role Summary
What will you be doing??
The Associate Publisher / Publisher is responsible for implementing the journal development strategies and delivering associated KPIs, by devising and implementing a programme of community-driven content commissioning activities primarily through desk-based guest editor and author interactions. They are also responsible for engaging and managing Editorial Board members. The Publisher may deputise for the Senior Publisher as appropriate.
Key job accountabilities include:?
Contribution to journal strategy
The Publisher will work with the Senior Publisher to shape and implement the portfolio and journal strategies by:
- Carrying out market analysis and providing recommendations for journal strategic goals
- Regularly informing the Senior Publisher of journal performance against submissions and accepts targets
- Updating journal scope statement on website and regularly liaising with journal Editor to ensure acceptance criteria upheld
- Develop Editorial Board succession plans to continually diversify and refresh the Editorial Board membership
- Regularly engage Editorial Board members to solicit community feedback, competitor intelligence, and input into scientific content development
Commissioning
- Develop and review commissioning plans in line with journal growth targets and authorship goals, and effectively communicate plans to other colleagues working on the journals
- Target strategically important subject areas in line with subject field analysis and journal strategy
- Recruit and onboard special issue Guest Editors with the necessary training, and maintain regular communication with them throughout the process
- Record all commissioning activity in the commissioning database
- Collaborate with Publisher colleagues on related titles to develop cross-journal special issue initiatives
- Regularly inform Senior Publisher of commissioning activity progress
Special issue programme development
- Accountability for the end-to-end publication of each special issue
- Collaborate with marketing colleagues to implement a holistic content acquisition approach for each special issue
- Identify opportunities and provide recommendations to improve the guest editor, author, and reader experience for special issue content
- Collaborate with the Product Manager to identify opportunities to improve the special issue commissioning workflow
About you:
The successful candidate will demonstrate:?
Professional qualifications
- A master’s degree or equivalent
- Environmental science / Earth Science / Physical Science Degree
Knowledge & previous experience
- Demonstrable STM Publishing experience and solid knowledge of the Publishing industry
- For Associate Publisher level: basic journal management knowledge and some Publishing experience
